Interview Tips

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011
As we approach the traditional busy period in the recruitment calendar I wanted to discuss ‘The Interview’. This can be as simple or as difficult as you wish to make it. The key is preparation. The more preparation you can put in for your interview the more relaxed and confident you will be. This sounds like simple advice but I find myself amazed time and time again by candidates at all levels that do not put the work in beforehand. An interview is essentially a test. There is no shame in doing revision on your experience and expertise. Not only does this remind you on past achievements but it will also give you the tools to convey the information in the best possible manner, ensuring that you stick to the point, cut out any waffle, and that you are giving the best account of your evidence.

Most modern interview processes include a Competency Based Interivew or CBI for short. Most people will have a technique or two to construct their answers for a CBI. My favourite is the S.T.A.R. technique, which can be used to answer any type of question.

S. Situation
T. Tasks
A. Actions
R. Results

Each of these sections is as important as each other. Most people skip over the Situation and Tasks to get to Actions and Results. This is a common mistake; not giving weight to the first two parts of your answer diminishes the credibility of the later section. Describe the situation that you were in or the task that you needed to accomplish. You must describe a specific event or situation, not a generalised description of what you have done in the past. Be sure to give enough detail for the interviewer to understand the full merits of your achievements.

Then move on to describe the action you took and be sure to keep the focus on you. Even if you are discussing a group project or effort, describe what you did; not the efforts of the team. Don’t tell what you might do, tell what you did. Finally, what happened? How did the event end? What did you accomplish? What did you learn? Give tangible evidence of your results.

Best of luck
Darren
